Taking inspiration from William Shakespeare's comedy Measure for Measure, ‘Desperate Measures’ is a Western musical comedy that premiered Off-Broadway at the York Theatre, and transferred to New World Stages after being thrice extended. 'Desperate Measures' won the 2018 Outer Critics Circle Award for Best New Off-Broadway Musical, and the Drama Desk Awards for Best Music and Lyrics.
At the York off-Broadway premiere, a crucial aspect to the design involved keeping all body microphones invisible, even from close distances, in order to avoid any anachronisms and help the audience to engage more fully in the story. The concept of light, invisible reinforcement continued to be relevant at New World Stages, albeit in a larger house. I also had the pleasure of designing several sound cues that consistently earned laughs each performance.
