Virgin Voyages, the new cruise line helmed by Sir Richard Branson, pulled specifically from downtown New York City theatrical artists and designers to develop its onboard lineup of original entertainment. The goal: to break the mold of stereotypical cruise entertainment and redefine nautical experiences for a new generation of sailors.
One of the culminating parties of the Virgin Voyages experience, Scarlet Night is a full ship activation that is amorphous at its core, meant to be unique for each Sailor. The show starts without warning, simultaneously activating the sound systems in over twenty of the ship’s onboard venues to envelop the entirety of the vessel. By integrating into the ship’s QSys system, soundscapes and unique experiences were programmed in each venue. As such, the sound design is critical to the successful implementation of flash mobs, live music performances, impromptu weddings, and other audience experiences.
